Top Beauty Products Malaysian Makeup Artists Swear By

From working with celebrities for the red carpet to filming scenes, brides and grooms for their special days, models for their endless photo shoots and doll-ing up clients for various events- makeup artists do know their stuff and they are pretty much tote a lot of similar products in their kits. Here are a few products our local makeup artists swear by.

💜MOISTURISER💜
1) True Island Honey Bee Venom Multi Solution Cream | RM78
2) Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream
3) Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream | RM215

Notes:
True Island is a Korean cosmetics brand and it becomes well-known locally after it was brought in by Nafura, the makeup artist. Although I do not own it, I've tried the sample before and swatched it many times at the back of my hand during makeup classes and when I visited VitaCare Pharmacy. It has a gel-like texture, very moisturising, takes a bit of time before sinking into the skin and I'd recommend it if you have dry-combination skin. The moisturiser can be too heavy if you have oily skin or sweat a lot.

Meanwhile, I've seen MUA like Nuex Rosli and Syedewa applying moisturiser and eye cream from Bobbi Brown onto their clients. The moisturiser is described as 'rich yet lightweight formula' and claimed to be ideal for layering under makeup. Bobbi Brown eye cream is something I bought recently, let me know if you want me to review it in details.

💜PREP WATER💜
1) MAC Fix + | RM94
2) Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water | RM135

💜FACE PRIMER💜
1) Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (Oil-Free and Radiance) | RM179
2) Make Up For Ever Primer Step 1 (Hydrating and Mattifying) | RM169
3) Hope Girl Magic Skin Primer | RM95

Notes:
Laura Mercier Radiance primer is a long-standing favourite of MUA not only locally but international too. It does work on me but not the entire time, so I personally think it's a so-so product. However, since most people finding this works, I personally recommend it if you have dry or dull skin. If you're oily to combination, choose oil-free or the hydrating version that would suit your skin a lot more.

Make Up For Ever also comes out with a variety of primers and each of them caters to different skin problems. You can use Hydrating if your skin is dry while Mattifying is designed for oily skin. Hope Girl Magic Skin Primer is closer to Benefit Porefessional in comparison. It helps to blur out the pores and making the foundation glides easily onto skin. For your information, Hope girl and True Island came from the same Korean company.

💜FOUNDATION💜
1) Nars Sheer Glow Foundation | RM174
2) Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation | RM183
3) Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Foundation | RM165

Notes:
Nars Sheer Glow Foundation is, without doubt, a beloved formula among bridal makeup artists for its lightweight but buildable formula, satin finishing that it gives and how long-lasting it can be so that the makeup can survive throughout the wedding day. However, based on my personal experience, you need to prep your skin well because it has the tendency to be clinging on dry patches. Earlier of the year, Nars launched their Radiant Longwear Foundation that provides better coverage and longevity compared to Sheer Glow but it does come with a thicker texture.

Clients with oily skin? No worries, Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation will save the day. It's full coverage and the finishing is matte. Apart from all these, I noticed a lot of our local MUAs are using foundations from Alha Alfa and Nuex Rosli. Best part about this? They have been around in the beauty industry for so long, working with countless clients, they sure know what they are doing when it comes to creating products that work the best with Malaysians' preferences and weather.

💜CORRECTOR💜
1) LA Girl HD Pro Conceal Orange Corrector | RM30
2) Bobbi Brown Corrector | RM115

Notes:
Not everyone is in need with the orange corrector from LA Girl, trust me. If you're fair to light-medium, just go for a concealer with peachy undertone that could conceal your dark circle. Bobbi Brown Corrector is milder in terms of orange-ness, it's most suits to someone who has medium skin tone. If you have red zits, you can use this too together with a concealer before blending it out. Let me know if you want me to review both of these items in details.

💜CONCEALER💜
1) Hopegirl Nude Concealer Base | RM58
2) Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer | RM108
3) Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Concealer | RM37.65
4) CLIO Pro Artist Liquid Concealer (Clio Kill Cover) | RM77.50
5) Trulooks TRUECONCEAL Instant Moisture Concealer |RM69

Notes:
You won't find many Korean beauty bloggers raving about Hopegirl concealer despite it's originated from that country but in Malaysia, this is an ultimate favourite to a lot of people including myself. Hands down, this concealer is the best and I can't stop raving about it. I like how it's full of pigments yet lightweight and suitable to use on most skin textures. I wished they came out with many shades but seeing how this is a k-beauty product, it's not surprising that they only have 2 shades in the line.

On the other hands, Nars is easier to work with since there's a perfect colour match for every skin tone because of the shade range available. It's creamy and highly pigmented. If you want something that is lightweight and has a pocket-friendly pricing, go for Maybelline Age Rewind. I'm on my second tube now and I always purchase it from Guardian.

💜SETTING POWDER/BAKING💜
1) Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (Translucent) | RM187
2) Channel Natural Finish Loose Powder (Translucent 2) | RM198
3) Alisa Cotton Angle Powder x Shazreeyana Syukri | RM68

💜COMPACT POWDER💜
1) Mac Next To Nothing Pressed Powder | RM122

Notes:
Tbqh, I rarely see Malaysian MUAs using compact powder to lock in the foundation, it's always the loose one.

💜SHADING/CONTOURING (CREAM)💜
1) Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick (Almond) | RM155
2) Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate | RM348

Notes:
Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation in Almond is known as a staple to do the "shading tanam" method and for your information shade is leaning towards warm brown. I have used it a couple of times so let me know if you want me to talk more about it in details. Meanwhile, I noticed Syedewa, who regularly works with famous faces like Neelofa, always use Tom Ford shading cream on his models. Has anyone tried it?

💜SHADING/CONTOURING (POWDER)💜
1) Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder (Basic Brown) | RM155
2) Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer Perfect Tantric | RM212

Notes:
It seems like our local MUAs do love Bobbi Brown products because here's another must-have item in their makeup kit- the Sheer Finish Pressed Powder in Basic Brown.

💜BLUSHER (CREAM)💜
1) Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge | RM117
2) Suikone Cushion Blusher |RM39

💜BLUSHER (POWDER)💜
1) MAC Mineralize Blush | RM92
2) MAC Pro Longwear Blush | RM116

Notes:
MAC blushers are classic and the shades that Malaysian MUAs always reach for are Sincere, Well Dressed, Peaches and Coppertone. For Pro Longwear Blush, there's one specific shade I always see it around which is 'Eternal Sunshine'.

💜HIGHLIGHTER💜
1) MAC Mineralize Skinfinish (Soft & Gentle) | RM139
2) Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter (Moonstone, Opal, Champagne Pop) | RM183

💜BROW💜
1) Cyber Color Auto Eyebrow Pen | RM28.20
2) Kiss Me Heavy Rotation Powder Eyebrow (No 1 Light Brown) | RM44.25
3) MAC Eyebrow Pencil (Spiked) | RM80
4) Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse (Medium Brown) | RM109
5) Make Up Forever Aqua Brow (Brown Black) | RM115
6) Hope Girl Natural Browcara (02 Medium) | RM48

Notes:
Cyber Color Auto Pen is perhaps the most popular item used by our local MUAs. It's a great alternative to its pricier counterparts like MAC Eyebrow Pencil and Anatasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer. I have at least 6 of this in my collection and I personally like it when it comes to brow defining because it does make the framing work a lot easier. I always get them cheap when I go to SASA discounted outlets like Genting and Mitsui. Meanwhile, Heavy Rotation Eyebrow Powder is something you can easily get from SASA outlet.

Popular celebrity makeup artists like Bee Ramzah and Syedewa always use MAC Spiked when it comes to brows while MUA Bellaz and Intan Kaharuddin prefer to use Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Pomade. I knew about Make Up Forever Aqua Brow through Syazreeyana Shukri when she suggested it during a bridal makep class I attended last year.

💜BROW CONCEALER💜
1) Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer | RM115
2) Kryolan Dermacolor Camouflage Cream | RM140

Notes:
I have only tried the Nars Soft Matte but basically, any thick and full coverage concealer would do the job. This kind of concealer is also good for spot and blemishes.

💜EYES PRIMER💜
1) MAC Paint Pot (Soft Orche) | RM89
2) Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original) | RM94

💜EYESHADOW (STICK)💜
1) Laura Mercier Eye Caviar Sticks (Amethyst, Copper, Sugar Frost)

💜EYESHADOW (SINGLE)💜
1) MAC Eyeshadow | RM73
2) Makeup Geek Signature Eyeshadow | $6
3) Ferra Rossa Pearluxe Eyeshadow | RM45

Notes:
Mac single eyeshadow shade especially in the shade Cork (warm brown with matte finish). Popular MUG eyeshadows include; Bitten, Cocoa Bear, Creme Brulee, Peach Smoothie, Shimma Shimma and Corrupt. Ferra Rossa Eyeshadow is a local cosmetic brand owned by popular makeup artist and influencer, Ferra Rossa. I personally have tried and tested her eyeshadows and everything are extremely pigmented! My favourite shades are Eclair and Sorbet.

💜EYESHADOW (PALETTE)💜
1) Huda Beauty Eyeshadow Palettes | RM275
2) Anatasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette | $42
3) Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette | RM165

Notes:
Huda Beauty, ABH and Tarte- just to name a few brands that come out with lots of shadows in a palette. They are all known to be pigmented, easy to blend and contain varieties of colours. Good thing is, the beauty industry these days is rapidly growing, companies constantly come out with palettes alongside with interesting formulations and shades, so a good palette for your eyes is easier to find compared to other products.

💜EYELINER💜
1) Kat Von D Beauty Tattoo Liner (Trooper) | RM93
2) Fame Liquid Waterproof Eyeliner (Black) | RM29
2) Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil | RM84
3) Maybelline Colossal Kajal | RM19.86

💜MASCARA💜
1) Maybelline Hypercurl Cat Eye Mascara | RM45
2) Maybelline Push Up Drama Mascara (Very Black) | RM30
3) Syok Cosmetics Mascara - Lash Stash To Go | RM48
4) Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara |RM122

Notes:
It's a shame that Maybelline discontinued selling their Cat Eye Mascara because a lot of our MUAs have it in their kit. The nearest country you can get it is in Thailand. Alternatively, the Push Up Drama Mascara has become a recent favourite where I noticed MUAs often use it in their makeup tutorials. Syok Cosmetics is Malaysia represent, I've seen people using this mascara and the result is similar to what Marc Jacobs mascara could give.

💜LIP CONDITIONER💜
1) MAC Lip Conditioner (Tube) | RM77
2) LA MER The Lip Balm | $60

💜LIP LINER💜
1) MAC Lip Pencil (Boldy Bare, Mahogany) | RM75
2) Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat (Pillow Talk) | $22

Notes:
If you want a precise lip that doesn't bleed, you need a liner to complement your lip colour. I'm literally a virgin when it comes to this category because I don't remember using it any on my lips, but I noticed MUAs like using MAC's lip liner and also Pillow Talk from Charlotte Tilbury.

💜LIPSTICKS💜
1) MAC Lipsticks (finishing: matte, cremesheen) | RM77

Notes:
I'm no longer a huge lipstick lover and collector but when it comes to buying lipsticks, I always go for makeup artist's recommendations. Just like eyeshadows, there are tons of lipsticks out there on the shelves that come with a variety of colours and finishing, it's really not that hard to pick a good one. For bridal, it has always been the good oldie MAC cosmetics especially in nude, natural and rosy shades like Kind of Sexy (matte), Velvet Teddy (matte), Honeylove (matte), Whirl (matte), and Modesty (cremesheen).

💜FAKE LASHES💜
1) Elise (Code: 6448 and 8190)

💜TOOLS💜

1) Beautyblender Original | RM93
2) IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush #7 | RM187
3) IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder #8 | RM183
4) Zoeva 322 Brow Line | RM62
5) Sigma Beauty E25 Blending Brush | RM66
6) MAC 217 Blending  Brush | RM117
7) MAC Synthetic Duo Fibre Fan Brush | RM117

Notes:
There's no point in having stacks of good makeup in the kit if we don't have the right tools to apply them with, so those above are the must-have items in a MUA kit.
