DIY | Bottled Nebula

I got inspired after watching Michelle Phan's recent DIY video and I just had to try making it myself.

Hello, Hai everyone! How's ya doing? It's been a while since the last time I posted a craft tutorial right?! So today I have interesting DIY that you can do for a gift or as a home decor with no advanced crafting skills are needed.

The idea of this project comes from the astronomical term, 'Nebula'. Nebula is actually a Greek word for 'cloud'. Well, it is indeed a cloud made up of dust and ionized gases in the space. These gases captured through different colour filters from the telescopic camera and that what makes a nebula seen in various colours. I used to participate in 'Cabaran Angkasa Kebangsaan' (National Space Challenge) many years ago and I remember reading about one of the famous Nebulae, the Orion Nebula. I'm sure some of you have heard about it before! Now, having your own Nebula inside a jar? Sounds cool.

What makes it even cooler is the fact that it's very easy to make. Basically, you'll be needing some cotton balls, an empty transparent container and at least, 2 different colours of food dyes. Another options for food dyes are acrylic paint and water colour. But seriously though, pewarna makanan baru sebotol RM1+ je erk? Pepandai lah jimat. Kalau pergi kedai bakery, biasa dieorang ada jual sekali botol & jar yang cantik, pun seringgit lebih. Cotton ball kat Tesco is around RM3+, big onesI didn't have cotton balls but there are a lot of cotton wipes inside my drawer so I used that instead. All of the items needed in this project are either can be found around your house or bought at the store for an inexpensive price.

Materials you need;
1) Transparent Jar/Bottle
2) Cotton Balls
3) Glitters
4) Food Dyes
5) Skewer/Stick
6) Some Cups and Water

Steps;
1) Mix few drops of food colouring with water in separate cups. It works the same as water colour - the more water you add, the lighter the colour will be.
2) Stretch some cotton balls and fill the bottom of your jar.
3) Now it's time to dye the cotton balls! But before doing that, add glitters and lightly shake the jar. Once the glitters are evenly distributed, simply add the first coloured water to the jar. You can use stick to push down the cotton or to create an uneven cotton layer so it would look 'more' nebula.
4) Repeat these steps with different colours until your jar is full.

I created these 3 bottles last weekend by using blue, red, green, yellow and orange dyes. I baked all the time, lol - that explains why I have so many colours of food colouring. There are some tips and tricks I would like to share. Firstly, silver glitter works better than gold glitter. Next, I'd suggest you to start with a darker colour at the bottom and goes lighter reaching the top. Also, make sure the water is completely soaked by cotton balls before adding another colour to prevent the colours from excessive mixing. That's really not pretty because you could end up with black colour - just like what I did with some parts.

I hope you give this tutorial a try. See you in my next post! :D
